Somnium

Dreams that do come true can be as unsettling as those that don't. (Brett Butler, 'Knee Deep in Paradise')

She couldn’t even remember what they were talking about when the rain started to tap on the roof of the car. Although their minds and bodies took separate ways for a while now, their hearts still managed to reunite in dreams and take long trips together.

There were interminable heated discussions between them, either they were talking about a subject they both agreed on or something they just felt very passionate about.

The sight of rain made her feel as if all her troubles are cleansed away and a new period of fertility and renewal awaits her. She heard the forgiveness and grace coming down on her. She felt at home. The road ahead was linear and smooth, partially covered by water. Wherever they were going, they had to hurry back as the insular highway that was crossing the ocean, would be soon covered by the pouring rain. What was her sense of direction and pursuit of goals? What was the sense of the sense? They turned the car around, without finding whatever it was they were looking for, and they started searching for clues in some wooden chalet that seemed abandoned.

She was huge, two heads above him but couldn’t remember for the life of her when she grew so tall. It must have been her Chinese platform shoes that helped her see the world from high above. The wondrous shoes totally mismatched the Cinderella light blue dress she had on. If she could only get rid of all these hairy spiders and giant cockroaches that were crawling onto her. It wasn’t fear she tried, but rather a feeling of annoyance and disgust. With an abrupt move, she shook them off and the god punished creatures scattered around the room, hiding their ugliness in murky corners. With her dress still on, she showered thoroughly, to only come out naked, clean and shameless. Her sister was waiting for her, questioning her nudity. These devouring females! On an equal attempt to both shut her sister up and ignore her, she grabbed one of the huge platform shoes and started looking for roaches and spiders. She was deaf but to her thoughts. They must be here, somewhere, spread around the room, under the wallpaper, behind the curtains, in the corners, under the bed. She would find them all. Why did she let them leave anyway? With a hunter’s instinct, she spotted and crushed a gigantic roach. The insect’s hard shell cracked opened with a muffed sound, leaving a humid and fetid spot on the wooden floor. The day crawled silently into the night, without her finding a way out or back, beginning a never ending hunt for devouring female spiders and hard shell roaches.
